Established on January 11, 1992, our organization emerged from a collective concern about the limited access to educational scholarships for students who did not rank in the top ten of their class. Determined to bridge this gap, we dedicated ourselves to creating a scholarship fund that would empower students from underserved communities to pursue higher education beyond high school.
Our scholarship pays homage to the legacy of Mr. D.H. Fluellen, a stalwart educator who devoted 26 years to the Elysian Fields school system. His tireless efforts, spanning from the early days of the Elysian Colored School to his retirement from Elysian Fields ISD, significantly advanced education in our community. Mr. Fluellen's leadership ushered in significant milestones for Booker T. Washington, including the establishment of its first library, vocational agricultural program, foreign language (Spanish), Home Economics, UIL, Athletics, and Lunch program.
Thanks to the unwavering support of grassroots community efforts and the dedication of former scholarship recipients, we have proudly awarded scholarships to over 105 graduating seniors. The scholarships have enabled recipients to pursue various career paths, including roles as educators, nurses, information technology professionals, and leaders in their fields.
At the D.H. Fluellen Scholarship Fund, we believe that every student deserves a chance to achieve their dreams through education. Join us as we continue to make a difference in the lives of future generations.
